2014-2015 Hyundai Ix35 recalled over brake fire risk

Hyundai Australia is recalling 19,541 examples of its ix35 model due to a potential fire risk with the braking system.

The manufacturing defect is said to impact ix35s made between 2014 and 2015.

According to the Department for Infrastructure, which issued the recall notice, the circuit board in the anti-lock braking system (ABS) module may short circuit when the components are exposed to moisture – which could result in a vehicle fire even when the vehicle is turned off.

It's worth noting that the issue doesn't impact the actual functioning of the brakes, but a vehicle fire may increase the risk of serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders, and/or damage to property.

Affected vehicles should be parked in an open space, not in a garage, and away from flammable materials and structures.

Owners are warned that if their vehicle displays an engine warning light to stop driving and contact their local Hyundai dealer.

Hyundai will contact owners in writing asking them to make an appointment with their preferred authorised Hyundai dealership to have the ABS inspected and fixed, free of charge.
