Suzuki is recalling almost 22,000 cars across Australia due to a manufacturing defect affecting the vehicles' braking system.

The Japanese firm operates under two different arms locally, Suzuki Australia and Suzuki Auto Co. Queensland, so there are two notices which essentially describe the same issue.

Suzuki QLD's notice states that 3466 examples of the MY16-22 Swift, Swift Sport, Baleno, S-Cross and Vitara are impacted by the fault.

The broader Suzuki Australia notice explains the same problem, but does not specify if the same models and age of vehicles are affected. Wheels has contacted the carmaker for clarity.

According to the Department for Infrastructure, which issued the notices, due to a manufacturing defect, the valve between the engine and the vacuum assist brake booster may swell under certain conditions.

As a result, the driver may need to making an increased brake pedal effort to stop the car as intended which could increase risk of injury or death in a crash. However, it's noted the braking system does remain functional.

Suzuki QLD says owners will be contacted when parts become available and asked to make an appointment to have the work carried out, free of charge.

A list of VINs for QLD is available here, and for the rest of Australia here.
