ONLY 15 votes separated first and second place, but in the end it was the Ford Ranger with Duramax V8 power that resonated most with 4X4 Australia’s readers.

The nail-biting finish saw the Ranger clinch the Custom 4x4 of the Year gong ahead of the impeccable Toyota ‘Thug Truck’ LC79. The six-wheeled 200 Series put together by MaxTrax head honcho, Brad McCarthy, rounded out the podium.

The 6.6-litre Duramax V8-powered Ranger, which ran a 468rwhp and 1320Nm on a dyno tune, runs plenty of cool kit including heavy-duty XGS two-inch-lifted springs wrapped around Ironman Foam Cell Pro shock absorbers (up front), a matching combo down back, a 50mm body lift, an Allison six-speed auto, and a New Process NP263 transfer case.

At the end of each year we select the best custom 4x4s that we’ve featured in the magazine during that year, and then we hand the responsibility over to our readers to vote for a winner. In 2018, the Custom 4X4OTY finalists also included a chopped Y62 dual-cab, a RAM 2500, a Toyota Land Cruiser BJ40, an immaculate Isuzu D-Max, an LC79 GXL, a mega GU Patrol, and a “mad” Toyota Hilux.

Everyone who voted went into a draw to win a Maxxis Tyres voucher valued at up to $2000, which was won by Z. Hussain from Queensland. We’re sure they will enjoy hitting sunny Queensland’s outback roads with their new rings of Maxxis rubber.
