  • BMW X1 small SUV receives five-star ANCAP under 2022 criteria
  • Weak performance for protecting the driver’s chest in frontal offset test
  • Does not apply to all-electric iX1 version

The all-new 2023 BMW X1 has been awarded a five-star ANCAP safety score under the 2022 testing criteria.

But, it only applies to the petrol-driven X1 variants with the fully-electric iX1 remaining unrated for now.

ANCAP says the Barvarian carmaker’s entry-level small SUV had weak performance for protecting the driver’s chest in the frontal offset test and was marginal for the chest of the rear passenger in the full-width test.

The reverse auto emergency braking (AEB) system also doesn’t detect pedestrians.

The third-generation X1 scored 86 per cent for adult occupant protection, 88 per cent for child occupant protection, 76 per cent forvulnerable road user protection, and 94 per cent in the safety assist category.

The more stringent 2023 testing criteria will come into effect soon, which will assess vehicle floodwater submersion, systems that detect whether a child has been left in the cabin, and car-to-motorcycle safety assist tests.
