The 2023 Kia Niro Plus has been announced as the Korean carmaker’s first ‘purpose-built vehicle’ (PBV), designed to be used as a taxi and ride-share vehicle.

Kia has modified the outgoing Niro electrified SUV to create the Niro Plus, but will also offer a ‘general model’ to retail buyers in selected markets, including Australia.

The Niro has been lengthened by 10 millimetres to create the Niro Plus, while height has increased by 80mm, increasing cabin space. Additional handles at the B-pillar also help passenger entry.

While exact details will be outlined closer to its launch, the Kia Niro Plus is expected to be offered as a traditional hybrid (HEV), a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), or as a fully-electric vehicle (BEV).

“Australia has been selected as one of the overseas markets to launch the general (non-taxi) version,” a spokesperson for Kia told Wheels.

“It will be limited in volume and arriving during the second half [of 2022] – further details [are] to be confirmed closer to launch.”

Kia says it envisages a scenario where Niro Plus owners use the car for work during the week – such as ride-sharing or courier services, for example – but still require a comfortable family car after hours and over the weekend.

A specific taxi model has also been developed for the Korean market, which uses thinner passenger seats and door trims to increase the cabin size for occupants.

Taxi versions also use an ‘All-in-One Display’, which offers; satellite navigation, points of interest, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, and can accommodate the addition of a taximeter digital app.

Kia recently unveiled its new-generation Niro, which will be aimed at traditional buyers who are looking for a crossover with a choice of electrified powertrains.

The company’s first dedicated PBV is planned for a 2025 launch, as Kia and its parent company Hyundai Motor Group look to transform into a ‘mobility’ company, rather than just a manufacturer of passenger cars.

“Kia is transforming its business strategy to focus on popularising EVs, and introducing new mobility products tailored to the needs of users in markets around the world,” Head of Kia eLCV Business Division Sangdae Kim said.

“The Niro Plus is our first step into the world of PBVs, a market that holds great potential for future development.”
