UPDATE, 29 November: It has been announced this morning that Jimmy Barnes has been forced to pull out of performing at Street Machine Summernats 35, as he requires urgent back and hip surgery that'll prevent him from performing for several months.
"As much as it kills me, I have to get this fixed so I can jump around onstage for another 50 years. I’m disappointed to miss out on Summernats in January," said Jimmy Barnes. "As everybody knows, it’s against my religion to blow out gigs but the Doctors tell me I need an operation as soon as possible."
We wish him a speedy recovery, and Barnesy has confirmed he's already locked himself in to headline the music at Summernats 36 in January 2024.
While that's the bad news, the good news is that replacing him on the Friday night will be none other than Jon Stevens, Diesel and fellow Aussie music icon Daryl Braithwaite!
They'll be joining Shannon Noll for what's promising to still be a truly ripping Friday night on the stage at SN35. Andy Lopez says he was disappointed to lose Barnesy this year, but is equally pumped up for his replacements: “We were really disappointed to hear about Jimmy’s situation, and we’re sending him all our love and good vibes for his recovery," he said.
"Jon Stevens is going to play his Noiseworks classics and all the great songs from his time fronting INXS," he continued. "DIESEL has to be one of Australia’s coolest rock and rollers with his killer band and a swag of hits. Everyone loves Nollsy. Personally, I can’t wait to hear 10,000 Summernats fans sing Horses with Daryl Braithwaite. We wish Jimmy all the best and can’t wait to see him at Summernats 36.”
DJ Brooke Evers and hip hop stars Bliss N Eso are still locked in for the Saturday night, so it's still shaping up to be a ripping weekend on the main stage at SN35.
The story to here
25 August, 2022: Living legend Jimmy Barnes has been locked in as entertainment for Street Machine Summernats 35, alongside Shannon Noll, Bliss n Eso, Stafford Brothers and Brooke Evers.
The iconic Aussie rocker, known for his automotive bent with tunes like HQ454 Monroe and Shutting Down Our Town, will perform on the main stage on Friday night.
“It’s been a long time coming, but I’m finally playing Summernats!” Barnesy said in the announcement. “I’m looking forward to belting out some rock and roll for everyone at Australia’s home of horsepower. I can’t wait to see you all there.”
He’ll be joined on Friday by Shannon Noll, another bona-fide car nut. Nollsy did it all at Summernats 33; not only belting out his classics on Saturday night, but also judging the mullet and burnout comps and taking the win in the celebrity mower racing!
Hip hop kings Bliss n Eso will make their third appearance on the ‘Nats stage. Between their regular appearances and passion for cars (owning a sweet custom Kombi), they’ve become a crowd favourite.
Big-name DJ acts Stafford Brothers and Brooke Evers round out the roster, offering something for everyone over the weekend.
Summernats 35 is on 5-8 January, 2023. Tickets are on sale now via the Summernats website.
