Shannons Winter Auction roundup: GTHO Phase III, Mighty Car Mods RX7, Brock Torana and more

Shannons has officially yanked the covers off its 2022 Winter Auction range, with a huge range of top-quality muscle set to go up for grabs.

Though the Brock-Chivas Torana (more on that below) is undoubtedly this auction’s Halo car, this XY GTHO Phase III can’t be far behind. The Ultra White car is reportedly one of 39 built in the colour, and was optioned with a laminated windscreen and 36-gallon fuel tank.

It’s unfortunately lost its original engine and matching Cleveland mill sometime over the last 50 years, so it now wears a reproduction tag and period-dated Clevo block.

In terms of high-end, Pro Touring style street machines, they don't get much better than this Real Steel-built Pontiac Laurentian. Check out the full story here and drool!

The boys at Mighty Car Mods have put their stunning Series 2 RX7 up for auction. This 1982 example was the subject of a 10-part YouTube build series around the mod process, even making its way to a limited-edition MCM poster.

MCM converted the 12A twin-rotor to EFI, bolting up a Haltech ECU and LS1 coil packs before rebuilding the suspension and giving the car a proper tune. It rolls on gorgeous 15-inch XR4 Longchamps and wears its original Stardust Blue paint.

Just a handful of these amped-up VZ Brock Group 2 utes were built before the legend’s untimely death.

Supplied by dealers to Team Brock, this manual SS-based ute received a new ECU tune alongside a bigger Targa exhaust and tweaked intake, boosting output to 290kW. It was also fitted with uprated shocks and chunky AP Racing brakes under the ROH Director wheels. It’s done just 80,207km.

A fair bit of work has gone into this 1976 LX Torana hatch. Shannons pegs the Torrie as a factory 253 and four-speed car, which now runs a warm 308 and wears plenty of A9X kit.

The iron lion packs a Crane cam and Yella Terra valve gear, and is paired to a Supra five-speed ‘box for old-school points. Add that to an HQ Holden front end, Commodore disc rear, and polished Welds, and you’ve got a recipe for a tough, engaging-to-drive streeter.

Fortunately, not everything at the Winter Auction comes with a house deposit-sized priced estimate. There’s some cool stuff at attainable prices, like this 1984 Jag XJ-S.

We think it’s a pretty handsome car, and the XJ-S has more than a little bit of history in the Aussie racing scene and street car culture. Perhaps some brave soul could snap this one up, bolt on some big flares and a couple of turbos, and go full Gary Walker (or Kerry Packer, if that’s your thing).

Headlining the show is the Brock/Chivas LJ GTR XU-1 Torana, which infamously ran out of fuel at Bathurst in 1973, forcing Chivas to jump out and push the car to the pits on his own.

Despite the setback, Brock and Chivas clawed their way back to second place. Brock took the car to first place the following in the ATCC’s Symmons Plains, Calder Park, and Amaroo rounds, before it was replaced by an LH Torana for the year’s final two races.

This car was restored by the Tate family, with Mick Webb maintaining the screaming six-pot. This is reportedly the first time the car will be offered for public sale, having spent 16 years with its current owner.

We gravitated to this Electric Blue XY GT. We’re told it’s a one-family-from-new car in unrestored condition, with a toploader ‘box and dealer-fitted vinyl roof.

If you prefer your Clevo cars to be more exotic and have fewer doors, there’s a super-mean 1985 De Tomaso Pantera going across the block.

Starting life as a GTS, it was subsequently converted to GT5-spec, meaning it's bigger brakes, toughened suspension, and bonded wheel arches instead of the GTS’s riveted units. The RHD Pantera has spent time in both the US and South Africa.

Check the pull-back sunroof on this 308-powered HQ GTS! It’s had the same owner since 1999, finished in an awesome Lime Green Metallic and houndstooth combo.

Of course, it’s not just original survivor cars up for grabs, as shown by this right-hook ‘68 Mustang fastback. There’s a 427-cube stroker under the bonnet, with a six-speed manual and pro touring gear underneath, including coilovers, an IRS rear, and Brembo stoppers all-‘round under those big wheels.

Corvettes don’t come much cooler than a manual, factory fuel-injected C1. The 1960 model you see here packs a 290hp small-block, and was awarded Silver at the prestigious Bloomington Corvette show.

Ordered as a 302 K-code car, this Tropic Gold XB GS Fairmont underwent the Mick Webb treatment and now displaces a healthy 393 cubes.

Despite being repainted almost a decade ago, it’s still tidy and presentable.

An honourable mention goes to this 440 Six-Pack Hemi ‘Cuda, in gorgeous shape with its factory-optioned pink and black vinyl combo.

And for those with an eye for rare, modern performers, a 2011 Lexus LFA with a 5-litre V10 and flappy-paddle auto. It’s one of just ten delivered to Australia and done a measly 5000km with one owner from new.

Finally, the July issue of SM featured what must be the most comprehensively-modified Suzuki Mighty Boy in history, so how could we overlook this beauty! In our estimation, it looks to be one of the neater Mighty Boys to come on the market in recent times.
