Tesla is an electric vehicle maker based in the United States, with manufacturing carried out there, as well as in China and Germany. Most Australian-delivered Tesla models are now built in China.
Tesla's line-up includes the large Model S sedan and Model X SUV, along with the mid-sized Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV. (CEO Elon Musk famously tried to spell 'SEXY' with the model names, but couldn't secure Model E – leading instead to the Model 3 we now know so well.)
What a revolution this American electric vehicle brand has driven. Founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, the company really took off when, in 2004, Elon Musk poured US$6.5 million of his US$100 million Paypal sale into the Tesla business – before becoming its chairman just three months later.
The brand's first model was the Lotus-based Tesla Roadster, and you can read the full story on that car here.
