Nearly six years since it was first announced, the hotly anticipated Lamborghini biopic – titled Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend – finally has a full preview trailer online.
And, well, you can forget some key details of what you'd read in our earlier story below. There's no Alec Baldwin as Enzo Ferrari, and no Antonio Banderas as Ferruccio Lamborghini.
That's probably for the best, too, with new leading men – Italian-American actor Frank Grillo (one of those 'that guy!' actors) and Irish legend Gabriel Byrne – bring plenty of talent to the roles, without as much potential for the blockbuster names of their predecessors to overshadow the story.
The trailer appears to cast Ferrari as the villain, of course, and Lamborghini as the protagonist who – after Ferrari famously tells Lamborghini he won't take advice from a tractor mechanic – vows to beat his new sworn enemy at his own game.
The film's director, Bobby Moresco, is an Academy Award winning writer – having shared an Oscar with co-writer Paul Haggis for the 2004 film Crash. His directing credits, however, are limited mostly to small-screen series and films, none of them international hits. Car enthusiasts will of course be hoping for Lamborghini to be his breakout directorial hit.
You can watch the trailer below. An Australian release date has yet to be announced, but it will hit screens overseas on November 18. (In the meantime, you might as well rewatch Ford vs Ferrari...)
THE STORY TO HERE
2017: Lamborghini movie announced
The idea has been knocking around for a while, but distributor AMBI has confirmed that a biopic of the life and times of Ferruccio Lamborghini is in the works.
Antonio Banderas is set to play Lamborghini, with Alec Baldwin in the role of his nemesis Enzo Ferrari.
Some big name talent has been recruited behind the scenes too, with Michael Radford (“The Merchant of Venice,” “The Postman”) directing the movie from a script by Bobby Moresco (“Crash,” “Million Dollar Baby”).
Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi’s AMBI Group first mooted the project in 2015 when they optioned the rights to “Ferruccio Lamborghini. La storia ufficiale”, written by the carmaker’s son Tonino Lamborghini.
Set to debut at the Cannes Film Festival, the movie’s working title “Lamborghini – The Legend’ follows the industrialist’s career as a manufacturer of tractors, military vehicles and, ultimately, the designer of some of the world’s most iconic supercars, presiding over Automobili Lamborghini until the late 1970s before his death in 1993.
A colourful character and one of Italy’s richest men, Lamborghini had one car for each day of the week and his love of women, celebrity lifestyle, and getting one over on Il Commendatore, Enzo Ferrari, is the stuff of legend.
With racing biopics like Senna and the dramatized Rush (the story of the Niki Lauda and James Hunt rivalry) having outstripped box-office predictions, perhaps there’s appetite for a motoring-related movie that’s a little more closely rooted to reality than Need for Speed or the Fast and the Furious franchise.
