Toyota GR86 shooting brake rendered

A look at a more family-friendly version of Toyota’s latest sports car (okay, maybe not quite so family-friendly)

We love a good fantasy render. It’s a great way to imagine cool ideas, especially when there’s a slim-to-none chance of them becoming a reality.

The latest photo-realistic render from Instagram-based artist Sugar Design is a gorgeous shooting brake version of Toyota’s freshly-released GR 86.

Replacing the factory coupe sheet metal is an extended roof and handy tailgate – perfect for hauling the dog along to a family beach day.

With a tweaked and lengthened quarter window, the design almost becomes reminiscent of Ferrari’s FF grand tourer.

While the production GR 86 coupe is a spiritual successor to the famed AE86, this shooting brake version shares more DNA with Toyota’s Corolla panel vans of yesteryear. Sadly, that utilitarian three-door body style perished with the KE70 in 1987.

Interestingly, a one-off shooting brake version of the last-generation 86 was actually built by Toyota Australia’s design division in 2016. Sadly, the company said it had no plans to bring the bodystyle to showrooms, leaving it to the same fate as the convertible 86 concept.

Check out Sugar Design’s instagram for a wide range of imaginative renderings, ranging from a cool widebody T2 Kombi to a targa-top Porsche 911 limo.
